The world of Voip has for sure merged itself with the Webmaster world. Which seems to be a good thing, at this point. As long as new Voip Security Testing keeps going and the freaking Gov keeps away from our voice data, Voip will be here to stay.
About 3 years ago I picked up Vonage as my Voip provider, not that I remember having any others to choose from. And thanks to Tanker from MadeInPorn, I was finally able to call from the United States to Canada for under $50 bucks a month, it was instant savings.
With all the mp3 players/phone/camera gadgets, 32″ duel monitor setups, and wi-fi toys that will end up melting your tin foil hats to heads, its easy to see how Webmasters can get lost in the world of electronics and miss the most important thing. Saving Money! After all, this is probably the only “gadget” you can own, that actually saves you money.
So the savings for us over the last few years is immeasurable. And now, Voip prices are down to $15-$25 a month, its savings for personal or business use. If you have the Internet connection for it.
Voip isn’t for the weak Internet hearted. Slow Internet connections, lag outs, heavy used lines, even downloading & uploading on slower ‘nets can make phone calls drop, have static, or lag. Voip to Voip -or- Voip to Copper: Phone calls sometimes will have about a 2-3 second lag. The better your Internet connection, the less of a problem this is.
The different Voip providers have a good mixture of services. For the most part Voip providers have the same services as your local phone provider, but at a much cheaper price. Such as voice mail, voice notice by email, call forwarding, call waiting, caller id and a mixture of other features that some Voip providers do and don’t provide. Some of the better features you can look for are individual call blocks, faxing, messages via web, and making sure your phone number is hard coded on your Voip Adapter.
Having your phone number hard coded on the Voip Adapter will allow you to have a set area code and phone number for people to dial. Now you can grab your Voip device, jump on a plane, head to another state or country. Once you arrive, plug-in your Voip device & phone, check your messages and wait for your phone to ring, all without changing phone numbers.
Now before I list off some Voip providers I would like to cover one more thing. I have seen Webmasters and reviews posted that when your net dies, your phone dies..Well, yeah people.. And, for the people worried that your phone won’t work when the power goes out, I recommend you get a uninterruptible power supply (UPS).
Through my research these seem to the
most popular and/or liked Voip Providers
| Service Name | Monthly $ | Standard Options |
Extra Features |
| VoIPYourLife | $15-$30 | yes | Yes, call filter, music on hold, more.. |
| VoIP.com | $10-$20 | yes | Yes, do not disturb, call reject, more.. |
| SunRocket | $10-$25 | yes | Some, distinctive rings, find me, more.. |
| Lingo (Primus) | $8-$50 | yes | Some, simultaneous rings, call reject. |
| Vonage | $25-$50 | yes | Yes, select your area code, fax, more. |
As with anything, I always suggest you do your own research. A quick look at Google for “VOIP+Reviews” returns over 300k search results. Research to see if others use the service in your area and if they like it, or has anyone had problems with your ISP and a Voip provider. A few quick review reads can quickly clear up any questions you have.~ TheDoc
