Feeding Adult Webmasters the Lowdown on RSS
About a year ago, adult affiliate programs really starting releasing Content Rich RSS Feeds (hosted gallery feeds). This new technology, idea, and way to update made the programs and the Adult Webmaster ignore the real power and broad uses of Feeds.
Feeds aren't simply for text formatted hosted galleries, easy seo, and quick updates for your Blog. You can use XML/RSS to republish Websites, affiliate products, duplicate across networks easily, and my focus with this article - general website feed syndication.
Out of all the possible goodies, Adult Webmasters are missing the most basic, 101 of feeds, the ultimate power that they offer. News, info, updates, insider details, celeb gossip, and every other possible bit of detail the Internet offers, at your fingertips in one click.
By selecting a Newsreader, like Google Reader, Yahoo's and many others, you can subscribe to news, sports, entertainment, blogs, and many other types of feeds, reading possibly 100's of Websites daily instead of the 10 or so most people read.
I use Google Reader, it's simple and clean. I also use the Google Labs Reader Tool on my GHomepage to stay up with updates on each browser restart. Google says, I currently subscribe to 47 Sites and over the last 30 days I have read 2,312 articles, reading 99% of all updates.
Lets subscribe to some feeds:
Log into your Google Account if you already aren't. Then visit Google Reader Here.
a) Using my feed, Copy this url: http://feeds.feedburner.com/TheDocBlog
b) Within Google Reader, on the left menu click: Add subscription
c) Paste the URL and hit Add.
d) Done, Thanks!
Each time I update TheDocBlog it will appear on the left, with the number of updates that have taken place.
In Yahoo: Once logged into your My Yahoo account find the Add Content link. Clicking this opens a page with a large URL box where you enter the Feed URL to the Website you wish to watch.
You can use FireFox Live BookMarks or when click a feed link directly; FireFox will ask you which News Aggregator or Feed Reader you would like to use.
Feeds Feeds Feeds Need Some More? News, World News, Sports and all that BS.
CNN Top Stories - CNN Sports - All CNN Feeds
MSNBC U.S. News Feed
You can also watch Google News Feed or search for news, like Bloggers and each time they update about Bloggers, that Google News Feed would update.
Other Things to Watch:
Use feeds to stay informed, I watch the ICANN Feed, in this industry I don't need to explain this. Pixel2Life offers a great webmaster tutorial feed with photoshop, design, web dev and more, it's a great feed.
If you use FireFox as most Webmasters do, when you visit a website with XML/RSS Feeds a small orange feed icon should appear in your browsers URL bar, clicking it will allow you to quickly subscribe to the feed.
Using a Feed Reader to watch websites that have XML/RSS feeds can be a great advantage to any active learning Webmaster or the sports buff that wants to know all the details.
Feed Readers galore, need some more, many more can found.
1) Google Reader: Quickly becoming the largest Feed Reader, if it hasn't taken over yet.
2) NewsGator Windows - Mac: Get the speed you desire through direct applications.
3) SharpReader: A windows based news reader.
4) Gnome Straw: A Linux/Unix based news reader.
5) My Yahoo: One of the largest readers, Women use My Yahoo, does that mean more Women use feeds?
6) AOL News Reader: Still popular and used, AOL now has an online reader.
7) Bloglines: Nice and simple, not many fancy Web2.0 services
This simple post quickly grew into two pages. An ending note, this is how other Webmasters and people stay on top some things so easily. If it's sports, SEO, politics, or Google, everything on any subject is available through an RSS subscription.
Enjoy ~ TheDoc
