Google Analytics can be a bit overwhelming to the newer user. All the new detailed statistics and toys can keep even the experienced Webmaster stuck in a daze, lost in a world of numbers. I attempt to play with my Analytics settings and features at least once a week. Why? Because understanding Analytics helps me make more money!
When it comes to Websites, not all Keywords are created equal. Some niched-targeted keywords can be a bad match for a tour or landing page. By adding or removing a few phrased words, you can effectively remove unproductive keyword phrases then introduce new phrases for testing.
Go to your Google Analytics account and open a Website. On the left click Traffic Sources then Search Engines. Select your top listed search engine. The report displays some rather important information, like the Average Time Visitors spent on the page and the Bounce Rate of the visitors for each Keyword.
Per Page Keyword Tracking: In Analytics with a Website open select Content on the left Tab, then Content Drilldown. Select a top listed page. This will open the Content Details, just to the right you should see a link that says, Entrance Keywords. This allows you to breakdown each page and study how the unique keywords are doing per page.
The higher the bounce rate, the less productive the keyword is, so the lower the bounce rate the better. Mix this with the Average Time spent on the Website, and you can quickly see how productive or unproductive the keywords are.
The below sample image (click to expand) shows two keywords which have rather high bounce rates, marked with a red square. 70-80% is a rather high bounce rate, but if you notice the extra words in the phrases are: perfect and ladies. Thinking about this, I guess my amateur girls don’t really have perfect boobs and Ladies often refers to age, and most of my girls are 18-25 years old.
Rather than increasing my already productive keyword density, I choose to target different words. Since I no longer buy Ad Words, changing ladies to girls was rather easy and I selected flawless to replace the keyword perfect.
Overall my search engine traffic didn’t go up or down after making this types of keyword adjustments. But my bounce rate has dropped 12 points, and to me that’s a hell of an increase from such an easy change.
A few things to note:
- Check your keywords across all the search engines. You may have an unproductive keyword phrase with Google, but across all the other Search Engine’s the traffic total is more and the bounce rate could be much lower. So always check!
- By checking the Content Drilldown of your Website Pages you may notice that some keyword phrases are only unproductive on some pages. A quick change of the page can sometimes help make unproductive words, productive.
- Look through all your keywords for the related bad phrases. The bad phrase may become more productive when other phrases/words are added to it.
- Google normally updates faster than Yahoo, often months faster. Do your research, make your changes, then wait a few of months to see what happens.
- Higher traffic volume keywords often have a higher bounce rate.
- Domain keywords will often have the lowest bounce rates, so why do so many sites blast the domain name all over?
Taking just 10 minutes to remove a few overly bad words or phrases can have great benefits down the road and it helps teach you how to create better text for your pages.
