Google GearsGoogle has a new toy, and it?s called Google Gears. The downloadable browser extension is open source technology (licensed under the New BSD license). This free tool allows developers to create web applications that can run offline, cool!

The tool currently works with Google Reader. Each time you return online the application will synchronize with Google Servers to grab the most recent updates. No more buying Magazines and Books at the Airport, just sync up your laptop through an Airport Terminal and have hours of reading material at your finger tips.

Note: Google Gears is Beta Testing ? Use at your own risk.

Google Gears provides three key features:

  1. A local server, to cache and serve application resources (HTML, JavaScript, images, etc.) without needing to contact a server
  2. A database, to store and access data from within the browser
  3. A worker thread pool, to make web applications more responsive by performing expensive operations in the background

Support browsers include: Apple Mac OS X 10.2 or higher or FireFox 1.5 or higher, Linux FireFox 1.5 or higher, and Microsoft Windows XP or higher on FireFox or IE. Opera and Safari are in development.

It?s not a new invention but it?s a cool tool either way and one I will be using with Google Reader. Rumor has it, Gmail and most other Google Services will also use this application in the future. ~ TheDoc
