This is for the all the Adult Webmaster trying to make a buck online and not wanting to screw the surfer over in the process.
Hidden Cross Sales are bad, ummk? But I’m not talking about those types of Cross Sales, yet.
What I am talking is about knowing how to find out if a Program which offers Cross Sales (xsales) is safe enough to promote or not. Non-checked and/or pre-selected xsales, above the submit button, with nice clean text, is the Industry standard for an xsale. But how do you really know if the surfer is getting screwed over or not?
Programs processing on Epoch or CCbill doing pre-checked xsales:
Any Programs processing with these two Billing Companies have some serious rules to follow. First, any Paysite offering xsales can only have them above the submit button with clean clear text. It also means both Paysite Accounts earn more than 10kish a month, I know that isn’t huge but it tells you they have reached a level.
A larger factor though is the Chargeback(cb) and Refund limits along with the danger zones that both Processing companies have in place. Both Companies will remove pre-checks from unique Sites or entire Programs and even xsales all together, if a Site/Program move into the danger zone or actually breaks the cb/refund limits for a period of time.
How can you use this info as a Webmaster?
Once you have found a program that offers and/or takes xsales, open all the sites join pages and go to the epoch/ccbill billing page.
What you are looking for are the Programs and Sites that offer pre-checked xsales and they have xsales that aren’t pre-checked too. This is a possible problem program that you need to look more into.
First, if all the non-pre-checked xsales, go to the same Paysite, then the Paysite being sold may not take pre-checks or it could be a problem site. It’s for sure worth taking a look at and making your own judgment call. If it’s a legit Paysite, check the review sites user comments to see if the Paysite blows ass or rocks the house.
The Warning Signs:
If a join page offers two xsales, both or one not checked, and they go to different sites. Well, this happens because the processors removed the pre-checks on whichever Paysite that hit the cb/refund danger zones or some other problem is going on, normally both will lose the pre-check option. A single site can actually go over a 1% cb ratio, as long as entire account doesn’t - but it probably won’t have pre-checks on that one site. Again, if you check the review sites user comments, and read about these sites you quickly start to see a trend.
Always check the site being Cross Sold, pre-checked xsale or not, you need to make sure the site being cross sold on your traffic isn’t total trash.
Merchant Accounts:
I have a few quick steps to assist me with finding out if a Merchant Account Program is solid enough for me to promote. First, I don’t promote anyone with any xsales under the submit button, that kills out about 150 programs from the start.
A few simple things to check:
- Go to the billing page of the Paysites and look at the name that will be billed on the credit card. Then make sure the copyright/terms, ect say the same name. Some Programs role merchant accounts, sometimes making things not match up correctly.
- Then do a Whois on the domain. U.S. Domains, have U.S. merchant accounts, at U.S. banks. They can still do hidden xsales, however if they burn the merchant account, they can lose processing with Epoch and CCBill too. Putting them in a rather safe category for me.
- Most U.S. sites/merchant accounts also have Epoch/CCBill - which may have Cross Sales that you can study.
- Euro Merchant accounts have a Company/Office located in Europe, staff in Europe and host in Europe (normally). They may have offices in the U.S too, but the main bulk of people are based at the office in Europe. I find that real Euro based Companies normally don’t have any xsales, let alone shady versions of xsales.
Some Red Flags to me are Companies that don’t have proper Whois info (paysites can’t protect it) and if the billing name isn’t the same as the Company in the copyright or whois info. Then sometimes you know for a fact a Company is located in the U.S., the domain is owed by someone in Panama, and they process out of Europe. Do you really care if they have hidden xsales or not? It’s your call - I’m just pointing out the facts.
Hidden Xsales and a Ending Story: Several years back I was chilling with some Webmaster Friends and story came out from one of the more interesting mouths of the group. Like many other times, this Friend enjoyed some of the finer social screw-ups in life, like buying whores. I don’t remember exactly how it happened, but this friend ended up finding himself a nice 3rd word Asian whore. This was no weekend warrior either; she was great looking, sexy body, mouth like a goddess, a great find for any dirty man.
And this is when the story changed. He said, “Let me give you some advice Doc.” Naturally I said okay, when I probably should have just said, No Thanks. Anyway, his little ending reminded me of all the hidden scam cross sales going on in this business today.
Without even finishing my story, it’s the difference between asking for a whore with two legs and getting one with three. Some people don’t mind - they may even like it. But for the average guy it isn’t until you see “it” that you realize you just got screwed in ways you never thought possible.
