SEO Test - Removing the HTML Title Tag

TheDoc

On late Dec 16th I upgraded TheDocBlog to Wordpress 2.7, on this day the main Title Tag on the front of TheDocBlog broke. I noticed the error quickly but figured it was a perfect time to test and see how important the main page Title Tag is for Search Engine Traffic. I allowed the missing title tag remain until late on the Dec 27th, so this little test went on for 11 days.

It could have been a fluke, but it appears the Search Engine traffic took a drop on the 16th, however in the stats I don't see a loss in the number of keywords that sent traffic. The following two days didn't improve any and by the 19th it was without question that a drop was coming.

By the 21st, a full 5 days afterwards about 75% of the Search traffic had dropped off and by the 24th, it was almost dead. By this point, TheDocBlog's main page was no longer listed and other than some very random keywords, any relevant search traffic was gone.

The Search Engines didn't Ban TheDocBlog, they simply removed the vast mixture of the listings it had. ~ Bastards

It's amazing what one error, while is a big one, it's still only a single title tag missing from one page. It didn't make a difference that every other page and title throughout the entire blog remained the same, links didn't change, structure didn't change.. just simply, one title tag was missing.

It took until the 30th to start getting back any noticeable traffic, 3 days after the correction was made. By January 2nd both Google and Yahoo traffic was quickly returning to it's previous levels. At least errors can be corrected rather quickly with both Search Engines.

The missing title test really opened my eyes at how important it is to create and of course use a proper title tag on the main page of your Website. I thought with all the other relevant and linked pages that contain proper titles I would only see a small drop in traffic. Rather, I saw almost a complete removal of listings across the entire domain.

When the correction was made, I spent a little extra time trying to improve the title text. After looking over the returned listings, it appears I have gained a few spots on some keywords. Time will only tell if the new title change was beneficial or not.

One thing I'm sure of though, a missing title tag in an html document will flat kill Search Engine traffic.

Ringing in 2009 - TheDoc secured spot on Billionaire List!

TheDoc

Middle FingerI can picture it now, the Adult Industry masses standing atop the largest of Mountains giving a big middle finger to 08! Crap sales, tubes, slow sales, piracy, dead sales, gov regs and more crud sales, 08 in general didn't go over so well for most of the Adult Industry.

But I can now look back, errr... I mean forward into 09, yes forward. With the Presidential change around the corner I'm certain that my slot on the Forbes Billionaire list is all but secured.

To help make sure I don't fall a few million short of my goal, I thought creating quick list of 7 Business New Year's Resolutions should help keep me on track throughout the year.

Delegate more work / manage better.
As a single business owner with only contracted staff, this topic couldn't ring more true. The task of delegating work and managing staff or a team is extremely important to running a great Company and living a happy life that one can actually enjoy.

For myself both of these factors are major limitations in my own Companies growth and personal life. This isn't a problem limited to myself, I know from working with many others in this Industry that many of us need help in this area. Being so, it tops it the chart as my #1 Resolution for the year!

Read more, learn more, and master more skills.
Video games, chat forums, some social sites, the Internet is filled with attention whoring sites and features that keep people busy for millions of hours a year. These half brain dead activities tend to burn up hours for boredom reasons rather than true fulfilling entertainment. Like any habit, rather than dropping it cold, try replacing it with something equally as additive.

Learning doesn't have to be locked into just the Adult Industry or even Business. Even though learning how to better Manage people or delegate work is important, it isn't always that entertaining.

That's where learning to cook a new food, paint art, learning build or repair something and even learn to travel the world for super cheap, whatever the desires are the Internet has information on it. To reach this point though, I personally need to delegate a bit more work.

Expand on Business and Product Brands by networking better.
The small Company and sole proprietorship probably need to focus on networking more but even the biggest Companies can benefit from more efficient networking and brand exposure.

For most of us in this Business, networking with others is vital to our existence. From posting on forums, sending out press releases, working the show floor, in general making people trust us is an important role for success in this business. As the years pass on, many of us fall into a drone mode. We post on the same topics, talking to the same people at shows, promoting the same brand at the same place to the same people.

Networking better, is about being smarter and paying attention to what and where branding takes place. Start by expanding on your current networking/forums, like starting more new topics. Contribute on different topics where you have to ask questions, helping get people to notice your name. Open your brand exposure and find new areas to easily expose it, like posting a Comment on TheDocBlog and other Blogs you may read.

Create a weekly goals and to-do list.
When the start of the week comes around, sit down and lay out what needs to be done for that workweek. Don't forget to add in a little time for yourself, like playing golf, hitting the gym or for this time of year, shoveling the sidewalk.

The weekly goal list is a simple checklist that you can scratch off as tasks get completed. Keep the goals very short-term and focused on your tasks at hand. Don't cram the list so full you have no time left for learning, networking or personal time. As you burn out on little daily projects on the goal list, use the downtime to read, learn and network.

Create joint projects with others.
While out networking and meeting new Business clients and friends, be sure to open yourself up for some possible join venture projects with trusted people. Building strong relationships with others can really help build motivation while helping delegate out important tasks that only Owners truly care about.

Many in the Industry seem to be stuck when it comes to fresh ideas or locked in a cycle of watching what everyone else is doing. What most aren't doing is pulling resources together, setting special time aside for these projects, and actually creating fulfilling joint projects.

Rather than getting stuck in the same old rut, try working with others to create new ideas and projects with. You may just find a whole new world of ideas and possibilities that you may not have otherwise ever thought of.

Optimize Company expenses and income.
It's the best of feelings knowing that you just expanded on an income stream or saved yourself a ton of money. The nice thing about having a goal like this is it can happen just about every Month of the year and there is nothing like repetitive self-gratifying satisfaction.

Optimizing income is the easily the most work and greatly varies based on your business model, but it can easily have the greatest rewards. The basics include talking to your primary sponsors for an increase in pay, getting clients on a rebilling cycle, turning passive income into recurring income, and talk to companies before you invoice to pitch for extra services or pre-paid deals. In short, create more income off the income streams you currently already have.

Then every few months as habit and always after downtime or errors by others, I contact Companies and ask for discounts or if any specials are going on. Why pay more money out when companies will give you price breaks?

You can save thousands each year, just by talking with people you already do business with. Such as, hosting and bandwidth providers, local and cell phone providers, processing company fees, bank fees and packages, and all types of content providers from DVDs to Paysite plugins. Even ask for discounts on tgp/trade scripts, when buying traffic or links, design services, and labor work, it's your money to save so ask!

This is easily one of the quickest and most efficient ways to recover possible lost money and save yourself from unnecessary cash going out the door when it should be in your pocket! But it doesn't work if you don't ask!

Too bored to be lazy?
Bored or lazy, the end result is nothing is getting done! All New Years Resolutions all have one thing in common. They don't mean anything if we don't get off our lazy ass and do something to make them happen!

Once that little bit of boredom starts to set in, don't turn to Television or Games, turn to learning and expanding the mind with something new. Turn to the family or writing something, learning a new skill, playing music, whatever it is.

The point is training the mind to not slip into the same time consuming 'boring' activities that don't really return any life rewards. Once you clear out the clutter you able to focus more on your goals and create true life rewards.

New Years Resolutions for a Business or Work is really more of a way to improve and expand on what you are already doing.

Create your own list of wants, desires, and goals for your own Company, job or life. Remove what is impossible and the clearly stupid from the list and post a comment here about them. Then simply, get off your lazy ass and make your real goals happen.

Blog comment and trackback spam - How to stop it!

TheDoc

Blog comment and trackback spam is simply out of control, which I expressed on the Adult Webmaster Forum Ask Damage X and the reason for this article. For me it isn't about filtering spam, great.. another plugin to do what others do. What I wanted was to stop spam, or as much of it as I could, from happening at all on TheDocBlog. In short, I want to reduce the little bit of bandwidth it costs and any server or mysql resources spam takes up, or as much as possible!

Over the last year I have created my own IP and Host Ban lists blocking 1000's of IP's from making comments, as well my my own word spam lists, javascript forms, false-hidden forms, different word and math captchas, renamed my comment post file. With all these goodies in place TheDocBlog still receives at least 75 filtered spams through my blocks. I have tested several different spam filter plugins, but filtering spam really isn't all that hard, and my end goal is to totally stop the spam from happening.

Based off some of the comments on ADX, I decided to do a quick little test. For 24 hours I would release the IP bans, rename my wp-comments-post.php file back, but keep some other basic setups in place all to track how many total spams I get in a 24 hour period. All comments are moderated so I don't really care if the filters catch them or not.

Some Quick Testing:
As stated above, TheDocBlog uses a mixture of non-plugin methods to filter spam. I didn't remove all the little changes, but I did remove all IP and Host blocks from the .htaccess file and replaced the original wp-comments-post.php file. The Javascript form buttons, captchas and everything else stated above is still in place.

  • 10:30 am - Sat Dec 27 - IP/Host blocks released, and original comments post file replaced.
  • 10:30 am - Sun Dec 28 - Cleared 226 spams and added the Wordpress Plugin, WP-SpamFree which is a spam blocker and not a spam filter!
  • In the above 24 hour period TheDocBlog received: 226 spam comments and trackbacks.
  • In a single day, this is an increase of 150+ spams, connections, db usage and so on.
  • 10:30am - Mon Dec 29 - This morning I cleared... ZERO spams! Yep, can't believe it myself. WP-SpamFree works like a freakin champion. Wow, what a waste of time dealing with other plugins, custom Wordpress changes, and ip bans. WP-SpamFree Rocks the house and a donation from me is on the way!

The Spam is Dead!
Again, what an amazing plugin. I'm a little shocked to be honest. I expected to test several plugins, some of which allow me to ban IP's & hosts from the wp-admin, others to improve filtering, and so on. As of late last night I removed all hidden forms, removed the math captcha, my own javascript blocks, and replaced the original comment file contents. With all of my own protection methods removed, I still have zero spams, amazing!

Thanks to Kektex on ADX for the advice on trying out WP-SpamFree and thanks to Hybrid6 for creating such a great plugin!
